What Are Implant Dentures?
While traditional dentures are held in place by natural moisture, suction, and muscle control, implant dentures use a series of around four to eight dental implants. These titanium rods are surgically implanted into your jawbone and provide a sturdy anchor for specialized dentures to attach to. The result is a full set of beautiful and strong teeth that function much more like natural ones. Not only does this eliminate the struggle of slippage during conversation or eating, but it also provides a more comfortable and easygoing dental experience overall.
Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures
During your consultation, you’ll be presented with options for your desired implant dentures. A popular option is a fixed or permanent prosthetic. This type is affixed to your dental implants via connector pieces called abutments and doesn’t move, allowing you to keep them in and treat them more like natural teeth.
Removable Implant Dentures
If permanent implants are out of the question, Dr. Ross can also provide a removable version sometimes referred to as “snap-on dentures.” These are connected to your implants with a bar or ball-and-socket, allowing them to be taken out for easier cleaning. This option generally needs fewer implants than its fixed counterpart.
The Implant Denture Procedure
At Ross Periodontics, your implant dentures will be performed all under one roof. The process begins with a consultation where our team will examine your mouth to determine if you’re a good fit for the treatment.
Next, Dr. Ross will perform your surgery with the assistance of our state-of-the-art YOMI robot guidance system. This will make your procedure faster and more accurate for the best results.
Once your implants have been placed, there will be a three-to-six-month healing process where your implants fuse into your jawbone. This process is necessary to ensure a stable foundation for your smile. So, while it may be a long time to wait, the results will be worth it! Lastly, after you’ve fully healed, we’ll place your final dentures over the implants and secure them in place.
Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?
So, what qualities do we look for in a good implant denture candidate? We want your treatment to succeed, so we strive to give you a thorough examination before presenting your options. Here are some of the qualities we look for:
- Good oral health with no cavities or gum disease.
- Fair physical health, free from uncontrolled diabetes and other auto-immune disorders that can complicate your procedure.
- Commitment to oral hygiene and your treatment plan.
- Sufficiently dense jawbone to support the implant fixtures.
Benefits of Combining Dentures & Dental Implants
While implant dentures are more costly up front and require a much greater investment of time than traditional prosthetics, the results speak for themselves. With implanted dentures, you’ll enjoy several fantastic benefits that other tooth replacement options just can't compete with, such as:
- Preservation of your jawbone through chewing stimulation.
- An easier oral hygiene routine.
- Fewer trips to your periodontist for adjustments and replacements.
- A restored bite force of more than 70 percent.
- Eating your favorite foods without worrying about slippage.
- Improved confidence knowing that your smile is secure and highly aesthetic.
